The Framework
Athletic development has an order and a timing that most of youth sports misses. There is a window when the nervous system learns to move, a window when the body reorganizes through puberty, and a window when real strength and speed are finally built. Each one closes whether anyone is paying attention, and the next opens on top of whatever was built, or wasn't.
The Speed Window maps all three. It is the playbook for the years between seven and eighteen, when your child's body quietly decides what kind of athlete it will become. Miss the sequence, and you spend the next decade trying to buy back what could have been built for free.

Sessions at this age are short, focused, and engaging. Drills emphasize quality over quantity, rest is frequent, and a good session leaves a child feeling energized, not exhausted. Speed work is brief and intentional: short sprints of five to twenty yards, agility that is controlled before it is reactive, jumping that focuses on landing softly. A drill that looks too easy for a ten-year-old is often doing exactly the right amount of neurological work.

They are re-establishing it: reinforcing the patterns that puberty disrupted. Acceleration work rebuilds posture and control under increasing speed, deceleration matters as much as acceleration, and foundational strength (goblet squats, chin-ups, hamstring curls) enters formally for the first time. Technique before load. Always.

Speed sessions are built around maximum velocity and resisted sprinting with generous rest, because a tired athlete cannot train speed. Strength is progressive and compound, and power work is low volume with an absolute quality standard. The window is not forgiving of what was missed. But it rewards everything that was built.

The families who get this right shift their frame from current performance to long-term readiness. They understand that what is being built between 12 and 15 does not show up in competition results until 17. They accept the delay, not out of indifference to performance, but because they know when results matter.
Most families measure development the wrong way. They track progress through competition performance, times, statistics, and playing time. These are outputs. They measure what development has already produced, not what is being built.
An athlete developing better mechanics during a plateau is building future performance. An athlete posting fast times on degraded mechanics is borrowing against future capacity.
