The fast eighteen-year-old you are watching in high school was not born fast. Between seven and twelve, while no clock was running, their nervous system was learning to move. Balance, rhythm, clean mechanics. The unglamorous work that wins nothing today and builds the athlete who wins later.
Here is what that work actually looks like, because it is not what most parents picture.
It is not a kid running timed sprints at full effort. It is a kid moving slowly, on purpose.
Take the simplest sequence in any good speed program: march, then skip, then run. The athlete walks through the sprint pattern first, slow and deliberate, knees up, foot landing under the hip, chest tall. Every rep is a teaching rep. Then they add rhythm and skip the same pattern. Only then do they let it go and run it. The whole point is that the mechanics do not change as the tempo rises. Speed becomes the last thing you add, not the first thing you chase.
Or take the A-skip, the foundational sprint drill. A nine-year-old doing it looks like they are doing nothing important. Knee up, toe up, punch the ground, stay tall. But that exact pattern, the knee drive and the foot placement, is the template that max-velocity running is later built on. Groove it clean and slow at nine, and the body has the blueprint for sixteen. Skip it, and there is no blueprint, only a fast kid with no foundation under the speed.
Even raw foot speed is built this way. Quick turnover, how fast the feet cycle, is mostly a neural quality, not a muscular one. It is trained through light, low-intensity repetition, feet under the hips, soft contacts, no stomping. The turnover rate a child builds through that quiet work becomes the ceiling they operate under for years. You do not buy that ceiling later in a weight room. You build it early, slowly, in the window when the nervous system absorbs it best.
That is the window. Roughly ages seven to twelve, the brain learns movement with an efficiency it will never have again. Coordination, rhythm, deceleration, clean sprint mechanics. None of it shows up on a stopwatch that season. All of it decides what the stopwatch says at sixteen.
Most programs skip it anyway. They chase the clock at ten. They time a child before they have taught the child to move. They reward the kid who is simply bigger or older, and they call early output talent. Then they wonder why the same kid breaks down or burns out at sixteen, mechanics wired under fatigue instead of built clean, a body asked to produce speed it was never taught to hold.
You cannot time coordination. There is no stopwatch for balance, or rhythm, or a foot that lands under the hip. So the work gets skipped, because it does not photograph well and it does not win a ribbon on Saturday. But it is the work. It is the difference between an athlete who is fast and an athlete who can stay fast.
Here is the part for the parent watching their kid drill in what looks like slow motion while another kid is already winning races.
Your kid is not behind. They are early in a sequence. The quiet work they are doing now, the marching, the skipping, the light quick feet, is the work that compounds. The kid winning at ten on size and early maturity has banked a result, not a foundation. The kid building clean mechanics at ten has banked the foundation. Give it a few years, and the foundation wins.
So let them move slowly. Let them build the pattern before they chase the time. Speed is taught in slow motion, and the athletes who last are the ones whose parents understood that the unglamorous years were the important ones.
